Andrew Vladimirovitch Mouravieff-Apostol-Korobyine (1913-2001)

 Andrew was the second born son of Nadezhda and Vladimir. He was born in Cannes on 7 February 1913. His godfather was Grand Duke Michael, brother to Czar Nicholas II. Andrew attended Le Rose Prep School in Geneva and then Summerfields Prep School in England. He graduated from Chillon College in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1935 and became a reporter for the London Times. He was active in the London social circles dating many famous debutantes of the time and became known as Count Mouravieff. In 1937, he married Mary Hall Caine in London and repeated the nuptials in Geneva at his mother's insistance. The couple drove to Munich on their honeymoon and eventually up to Berchtesgaden. They were in a flashy Mercedes and took a wrong turn up towards Hitler's famous "Eagle's Nest" retreat. Fortunately, they were able to turn around and beat a hasty retreat with the police in hot pursuit. The couple's first child, Michael was born in England in 1940 and following the outbreak of WWII, he was forced as a foreigner to leave England. He went to the United States and remained with friends in Newport, Rhode Island  for most of the duration of the war. In 1944 he went to North Africa as a news correspondent with the London Times and joined up with the Free French forces. He rejoined his wife in England following the armistice in 1946 and welcomed his second son, Nicholas into the family on May 10, 1947. In 1949 he was sent to the British Zone of Germany representing the London Times and spent a year in Bad Zalsuflen and Bad Pyrmont in northern Germany. In 1950 he joined with Edgar Chandler at the World Council of Churches Refugee Department and took over directing its Latin American operations.  He oversaw the Post-War relocation of the "Old Believers" from Russia thru China to settlements in Brazil and Bolivia and opened offices in Peru, Chile, Argentina and Brazil in the early 1950s. He stayed living in Latin America from 1951 until 1968 when he returned to Geneva, By then he had divorced his first wife in 1954 and remarried to Ellen Rothschild from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Together they had a son, Cristopher in 1960. The family which included a son, Roger, from her marriage to Ian Wright who had died from cancer early on, returned to Switzerland in 1968.

Andy lived in the same apartment at 31 Rue de L'Athenee in Champel where he had lived with his previous wife and two sons. Shortly after arriving he moved next door on a higher floor at 33 ue de L'Athenee where he remained until his death in 2001. Following his return to Geneva in 1968, he joined Bernard Cornfeld, founder and owner of IOS SA. (Investors Overseas Services) as VP, Latin America working directly under James Roosevelt, eldest son of former US President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Andy left in late 1970 just before the collapse of IOS. He then joimed the IFSW (International Federation of Social Workers) and rose thru the ranks to serve as its Secretary General from 1975 to 1992. The IFSW was headquartered in Geneva as a United Nations NGO. Ellen served as Deputy Secretary general and together helped grow the IFSW. After his death in 2001, Ellen  served as the organization's primary representative to the United Nations in Geneva until her passing in 2014. The Andrew Mouravieff-Apostol Medal was created in 2003 and is the highest award given by the IFSW to individuals and organizations that make an outstanding contribution to international social work.
