Letters and documents compiled by M. Golovatchev between 1911 and 1912 concerning the Mouravieff-Apostol family history.

Apparently, Golovatchev was preparing the first scholarly biography of Matvei Mouravieff-Apostol based on original archival sources.

His methodology is surprisingly sophisticated:

• consult state archives,
• compare manuscripts,
• verify handwriting,
• interview descendants,
• search private family collections,
• compare portraits,
• verify military decorations,
• locate graves,
• check contemporary memoirs,
• verify published sources against originals.
