* Decembrists - A famous group of revolutionaries who attempted an armed uprising on December 26th 1825 against Czar Nicholas I. In Russian they were known as Dekabristas so named for the month of the uprising. The insurrection was swiftly snuffed out by the Czar's army and the 5 leaders were executed by hanging in early July 1826. The rest of the conspirators were exiled to Siberia where they remained until 1856. The famous Senate Square in St. Petersburg where the uprising was put down was renamed Decembrist Square in 1925 by the Bolsheviks and in 2008 became Senate Square - its original name before Catherine erected the statue of Peter and called it Peter the Great Square.
