Kokoshnik type Ceremonial headdress<\/span><\/h2>\n

Ceremonial Women’s Headdress<\/strong>

\nMade in Russia, probably St. Petersburg or Kyiv, c. 1900\u20131910 with a\u00a0Silk foundation embroidered with gilt and silver bullion thread, metal purl, sequins, and glass bead fringe.\u00a0This piece is 6\u201d high\u00a0with a\u00a07 1\/4\u201d diameter, semi round with flat back and on each side ear flaps. Original cardboard hat box \u00a0Materials include heavy buckram, silk lining, padded crown and hand-couched bullion embroidery.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n

    The workmanship is consistent with expensive Russian embroidery from around 1900.<\/p>\n

    The bead fringe<\/h3>\n

    Consists of repeated floral or rosette motifs made from:<\/p>\n

    • yellow seed beads<\/li>\n
    • faceted translucent beads<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Each motif appears individually constructed and then attached around the lower edge which\u00a0is considerably more elaborate than ordinary trim.<\/p>\n

      This richly embroidered ceremonial woman’s headdress belonged to Nadezhda Fedorovna Tereshchenko (1888\u20131968)<\/strong>, daughter of the Ukrainian industrialist and aviation pioneer Fedor Fedorovich Tereshchenko<\/strong> and wife of Vladimir Vladimirovich Mouravieff-Apostol-Korobyine<\/strong>. It has remained continuously in the Mouravieff-Apostol-Korobyine family since before the Russian Revolution and is accompanied by its original striped cardboard storage hat box.<\/p>\n

      Constructed upon a rigid buckram foundation, the headdress is entirely covered with hand-couched gilt and silver bullion embroidery over a crimson silk foundation. The lower edge is finished with an elaborate hand-made fringe composed of white, yellow, and translucent glass beads arranged in repeating floral motifs. The interior retains its original pink silk lining and structural components.<\/p>\n

      Although initially resembling an Imperial Russian court kokoshnik, its distinctive semi-cylindrical form with a flat rear and projecting ear flaps suggests that it represents a rarer ceremonial headdress associated with aristocratic or regional formal costume of the late Imperial period. Further comparative study with museum collections may permit a more precise identification.<\/p>\n
